What is CBRS

Release Date: 2019-10-19 16:44:33

Another technology that could make WiFi obsolete is called CBRS, which stands for Citizens Broadband Radio Service. The CBRS allows anyone to share much of the spectrum currently used by the U.S. navy. In February, nokia, Alphabet and qualcomm used the spectrum to test LTE technology in a high-definition video broadcast of a car rally in Las Vegas. If successful, the CBRS could ease the shortage of wireless spectrum.

MIchael Peeters, nokia's head of innovation portfolio management and chairman of the CBRS alliance, believes CBRS are more reliable than WiFi and could eventually become a better choice for factories, airports and ports.

Why is CBRS critical

CBRS is important because it has advantages in a variety of markets and application scenarios.

Its main advantages are:

1. Make private LTE wireless network economically and technically feasible, and its performance is significantly better than the current wi-fi network used for this purpose.

2. Spectrum can be used for a variety of purposes without increasing costs.

3. Using the most advanced SAS, it is not necessary to scan the spectrum before transmission.

4. Allow wireless carriers to increase coverage and capacity, and to increase data rates with or without licenses or both.

5. Provide an alternative to "remote level transmission", which was previously provided almost entirely by low power wide area network (LPWAN) relays and operators.

6. Change the way that distributed antenna system (DAS) is controlled and operated by neutral host.

7. Use prior art: CBRS can be used primarily for LTE (especially tdd-lte), but it can also be used for other technologies, even wi-fi, as long as they are "digital" compatible with FCC rules.
